To dig up the beds or not?

In the past, digging up beds was considered obligatory for every gardener. Today, we garden experts see things differently, at least as far as already planted or used soil is concerned. The reason: around ten billion microorganisms live in one litre of soil, which carry out important conversion processes in thegarden soilThey are tied to certain conditions such as temperature and humidity in the different soil layers. Digging disrupts the structure and the microorganisms die. It is not uncommon for weed seeds to reach the surface and start to germinate when digging. Digging should therefore only be done if a part of the garden that has not been used before is to be replanted or sown. It is also recommended for heavy, clayey soils, preferably in autumn, because the winter weather helps to break up the rough structure.

Do not damage the roots of ground cover plants

In order for perennials and grasses to look great in summer, they need care in spring. The surface of the garden soil should generally only be loosened slightly with a cultivator or harrow. In this way, compostor rock flour can be easily incorporated.

Caution: When working the soil, the root formation of ground cover plants such aslady's mantle, Golderdbeere and fromcranesbill speciesbe disturbedn. They then grow worse and are more susceptible to diseases and pests.

Fertilizing for healthy growth

In spring, garden plants should also be fertilized so that they have a balanced supply of nutrients. Horn shavings and horn meal are popular and highly recommendedorganic fertilizers, However, they mainly supply the plants with nitrogen. For lush flowering and good health, plants also need phosphorus and potassium as well as trace elements. The latter are usually found in abundance in rock flour. The best universal fertilizer is compost. It provides everything that plants need. Two to three liters per square meter are recommended.
